The Polaris® KA low‑distortion optical adjustment mount (U.S. Patent No. 9,599,786) delivers long‑term alignment stability while minimizing optical surface deformation induced by the mount itself. The mounts featured on this page are designed for Ø1/2‑inch optical components.
Fixed optical component
Compared with standard designs that use fixed screws or retaining rings, this optical mount features a three-point contact mounting plate for securing optical components, thereby minimizing optical distortion. Precision positioning springs between the optical element and the retaining ring eliminate bending moments on the optic and ensure that the applied force remains constant even under large temperature variations. For more details, please refer to the Low‑Distortion and Optical Component Mounting tabs.
Polaris optical component mounting holes are precision‑machined to ensure optimal beam‑alignment stability under varying environmental conditions, such as temperature fluctuations, transport shocks, and vibrations. Each kinematic mount is designed for Ø1/2‑inch optical components with diameters within the specified range of +0/−0.005 inches; using components outside this range may result in reduced performance. For mounts compatible with other optical component sizes, please contact us. Technical Sales 。
Design
Polaris KA-series adjustment mounts are crafted from age‑hardened, lightweight 7075 aluminum alloy and feature precision‑matched adjusters equipped with ball‑contact points and sapphire washers, delivering smooth, precise motion. As indicated on the test data label, these mounts have undergone extensive testing to ensure superior performance. Polaris’s design addresses all common sources of beam misalignment; for more details, please refer to the Design Features tab.
Install the mounting post
These PolarisKA adjustment mounts feature #8 (M4) countersunk holes for mounting posts. For additional guidance on mounting configurations, please refer to the Usage Instructions tab.
All PolarisKA adjustment mounts are compatible with cleanroom and vacuum applications, with a maximum bake-out and operating temperature of 80 °C. For details, please refer to the Specifications tab and the Design Features tab.
The aluminum front and rear plates of the PolarisKA adjustment mount undergo acid etching, a specialized 5 µm-thick anodizing layer, and a double‑layer nickel seal, followed by boiling in reverse osmosis deionized (RODI) water. This process produces a clean, smooth, thin yet exceptionally hard, non‑porous all‑metal surface with a sealed oxide layer, making it suitable for low‑outgassing laser systems and cleanroom assembly applications. Some vacuum chamber manufacturers also employ this same surface treatment to prevent the formation of native oxide on bare aluminum surfaces. Compared with standard anodizing, this treatment delivers superior results. For PolarisKA adjustment mounts, we recommend a maximum bake temperature of no more than 80 °C. For detailed information, please refer to the specification label.
To further reduce the outgassing rate in ultra-high vacuum (UHV) systems, we can supply chemically cleaned 6061‑T6 aluminum adjustment mounts, packaged in double vacuum bags, tailored to your requirements. For more details, please contact us. Technical Sales . Due to reduced surface hardness, these adjustment mounts will no longer exhibit the same surface toughness, leading to accelerated wear of the lens mounting grooves and the adjuster threads. Such mounts also require careful handling and storage to prevent surface contamination and the formation of an intrinsic oxide layer. The maximum bake‑out temperature for these custom‑made adjustment mounts does not exceed 120 °C.
To achieve the lowest outgassing rate in UHV systems, consider using stainless steel. Polaris Series , with a maximum baking temperature not exceeding 200 °C.

Please note that the 8-32 cap screw reduces the clear aperture to 0.368 inches (9.3 mm), while the M4 cap screw reduces it to 0.34 inches (8.6 mm). If you are concerned about the impact of the cap screws on the clear aperture, please contact… Technical Sales Explore alternative mounting options. 8-32 cap screws require a 5/64-inch hex key, while M4 cap screws require a 2.5 mm hex key. For custom mounting configurations, each countersunk hole is equipped with Ø2 mm locating pins on both sides to ensure precise positioning and installation angles. We recommend using standard DIN 7‑M6 locating pins; for details, please click the file icon below () to view the PDF drawing. Locating pins are sold in packs of 100 at the bottom of the page.
