A waveplate, also known as a phase retarder, is an optical component that alters the polarization state of light by introducing an optical path difference (or phase difference) between two mutually orthogonal polarization components. Depending on the type and parameters of the waveplate, the output light can be linearly polarized, elliptically polarized, or circularly polarized.
The thickness of a multi-order waveplate equals the sum of several full-wave plate thicknesses plus the thickness corresponding to the desired retardance. A 1/2‑wave multi-order waveplate (Multiple Order λ/2 Waveplate, Multiple Order λ/2 Waveplate Retarders) is relatively easy to fabricate; however, it is highly sensitive to temperature, wavelength, and angle of incidence.
