High-Performance Antennas Based on MXene and Flexible, Transparent MXene Metasurfaces

The teams of Chuanfang Zhang and Yubin Cao at Sichuan University have, through an optimized nanoimprint lithography–doctor‑blading process, realized the first MXene‑based conformal, transparent, and high‑performance antenna. The nanoimprinted MXene mesh‑type transparent conductive film (TCF) achieves an exceptional balance among low sheet resistance (4.32 Ω/sq), high transmittance (~89.1%), and excellent flexibility. The authors demonstrate the TCF’s multifunctionality by addressing two representative scenarios in IoT networks. For personal devices, a highly efficient MXene‑based transparent dipole antenna enables quasi‑transparent wireless wearables capable of long‑range real‑time communication (>30 m). For fixed infrastructure, an MXene‑based digitally coded metasurface delivers high‑quality wireless communication while maintaining a low bit error rate (~0.15%) even under bending conditions. This work establishes MXene as a versatile platform that successfully integrates conformal transparency with superior electromagnetic performance, paving the way for next‑generation stealthy IoT wireless systems.
The research findings were published in Science Advances on June 12, 2026, under the title “Conformal, Transparent, and Efficient MXene Grid Antennas for Flexible Wireless Electronics.”
