Coherent Microwave-to-Optical Polarization Conversion Based on Holographic Quantum Sensing

The team of Changshun Wang at Shanghai Jiao Tong University has proposed an atom‑based holographic quantum sensing technique that establishes a one‑to‑one correspondence between microwave fields and the polarization states of light. By exploiting photoinduced circular dichroism and birefringence in a four‑level atomic system excited by holographic polarization patterns, the authors have constructed a vectorial atomic hologram. Their study demonstrates that the polarization state of the reconstructed holographic diffraction field depends on the polarization state of the incident microwave, a relationship analyzed using Jones formalism and density matrix methods. Furthermore, experimental results confirm broadband microwave‑to‑optical polarization conversion—preserving phase information—at microwave frequencies of 31.467 GHz and 2.925 GHz, with a maximum polarization conversion efficiency of 10.42%. This work offers an effective strategy for coherent polarization‑information transmission across different frequency bands.
