Precision Fiber Optic Measurement
The FPM-8220 fiber‑optic power meter and the FMH‑8700 series fiber‑optic measurement heads are designed to deliver precise optical measurements for demanding test and measurement applications involving fiber‑optic components. The FPM‑8220 incorporates a low‑noise picoammeter, enabling measurements across a wide dynamic range while maintaining the high stability and repeatable positioning accuracy required for precision metrology. Specifically engineered for production environments, the FPM‑8220 features an intuitive front panel and comes standard with GPIB and USB remote interfaces. When paired with one of the FMH‑8700 series fiber‑optic measurement heads, the system achieves measurement accuracy better than ±0.01 dB, with repeatability of ±0.01 dB, thereby enabling highly accurate power measurements of precision fiber‑optic components.
Easy to operate
The front panel features a large 7‑segment LED display with an integrated dot‑matrix display. The sizable 7‑segment LED makes it easy to monitor the measured power across the entire laboratory, presenting the power in either dBm or mW and allowing you to reference previous settings. The dot‑matrix display can show the set wavelength, filter configuration, and gain range, or alternatively, a bar graph. The front‑panel buttons are grouped by function for convenient setup.
Storing and recalling instrument settings
For a variety of test configurations, the FPM‑8220 optical power meter offers storage and recall capabilities. The storage function lets you save all front‑panel settings of any given instrument configuration to a numbered bin file. The recall function enables you to retrieve any saved configuration at any time—either via a simple front‑panel button press or remotely through the GPIB and USB interfaces. An additional recall feature allows the FPM‑8220 to display information about the currently connected power probe and its calibration date. Together, the storage and recall functions help save time by eliminating the need to reconfigure the instrument for different manufacturing runs or R&D experiments.
Optical measurement head tailored to your application
The calibration data for the FMH-8700 series fiber-optic measurement heads is stored in the connector, enabling rapid replacement of the measurement head across different test setups. The measurement head covers a wavelength range of 800 nm to 1650 nm and a power range of −85 dBm to +30 dBm.
Compatible with various fiber optic connectors

Remote interface
The FPM-8220 enables remote instrument operation via either an IEEE 488.2 GPIB interface or a USB 2.0 interface. All instrument control and functionality are accessible through these interfaces, facilitating straightforward remote programming and control in automated test systems that require repeatable, precise test sequences, measurements, and data processing. By offering compatibility with the FPM-8210 and supporting the corresponding Agilent 8163A remote commands, the FPM-8220 can replace both the FPM-8210 and the Agilent 8163A in automation applications.
