Plasma Metamaterial Time Crystal

Author:

The team of Yannis Laplace at École Polytechnique has demonstrated an all‑optical realization of a photonic time crystal, implemented using a terahertz‑frequency surface plasmon cavity metamaterial. The authors show that by field‑induced dynamic modulation of the carriers’ kinetic energy and effective mass—up to 80% of their rest mass—they can achieve strong (approaching unity) and coherent (sub‑optical‑cycle) periodic driving of the plasmonic metamaterial. Spectroscopic measurements reveal that, at a singularity where two Floquet‑driven optical eigenmodes coalesce, the system undergoes a transition into a pulsed time crystal (PTC) state. In this PTC state, emergent gain reduces plasmonic losses by more than 50%, and the authors predict that plasmonic lasers could be realized experimentally. These findings establish a robust platform for time‑domain photonics in plasmonic systems.

The research findings were published in Nature on July 29, 2026, under the title “Plasmonic metamaterial time crystal.”
