Full-Color 3D Visualization Based on Janus Metascale Optical Fibers
Author:
The team of Fei Xu and Shuming Wang at Nanjing University has proposed a single‑pass, bidirectional system integrating metasurface fiber bundles—referred to as the Janus metasurface fiber system. By switching between forward and reverse propagation along the same optical path, the authors simultaneously achieve passive two‑dimensional imaging in the visible spectrum and active three‑dimensional depth sensing. Experimental results demonstrate that, thanks to time‑division multiplexing between single‑wavelength array scanning and multi‑color illumination, the system exhibits high imaging fidelity and robust noise suppression. In interpolated, optimized 3D depth imaging, the authors achieved a 60° field of view and a divergence angle of less than 2°. Furthermore, by fusing bimodal data, they showcase enhanced broadband depth‑resolved synthetic imaging and edge‑detection capabilities. Their work highlights the system’s potential applications in real‑time biomedical diagnostics, LiDAR, and industrial inspection, among others.
The research findings were published in Nature Communications on June 8, 2026, under the title “Full-color 3D visualization with Janus metafiber.”
