FPGA Reconfigurable Cryptographic Accelerator
Author:
I. Project Overview
Targeting network security, data storage, and edge computing applications, we have designed and implemented a high-performance, low-latency, reconfigurable signal encryption processor based on an FPGA platform. The processor supports multiple mainstream cryptographic algorithms, including AES, SM4, and ChaCha20, and allows for rapid algorithm switching via software commands during runtime, thereby meeting the requirements of varying security levels.
Core Values : Upgrades traditional CPU‑based software encryption to hardware‑accelerated wire‑speed encryption, boosting throughput by several times and reducing latency to the microsecond level, while delivering milliwatt‑level power efficiency—making it ideally suited for power‑sensitive edge devices.
II. System Capabilities
-
Wire-speed encryption processing Supports real-time encryption of data streams over interfaces such as Gigabit Ethernet and SATA, with a throughput of ≥1 Gbps and zero packet loss.
-
Multi-algorithm dynamic reconfiguration : Built-in IP cores such as AES‑GCM, SM4‑CTR, and ChaCha20‑Poly1305, with support for instruction‑based switching during operation; switching time < 1 μs.
-
Ultra-low latency : Fully pipelined hardware architecture, with encryption processing latency < 10 μs (excluding transmission)
-
High energy efficiency ratio Typical power consumption: 3 W; the performance‑per‑watt ratio is more than 10 times that of a general‑purpose CPU.
-
Secure Key Management : On-chip protected memory area, supporting secure key injection and periodic rotation
-
High-speed interface : Integrates an SFP+ optical port (10 Gbps), PCIe Gen3 x4, and a DMA controller to enable non-blocking data transmission and reception.
Quantized output :
-
Encryption throughput (Gbps)
-
Algorithm Switching Response Time (μs)
-
End-to-end latency (μs)
-
Power Consumption (W) and Energy Efficiency Ratio (Gbps/W)
III. Technical Highlights
| Advantage | Explanation |
|---|---|
| Hardware Parallel Pipeline | Each cryptographic algorithm is implemented as an independent IP core, with zero-copy data‑flow processing, achieving wire‑speed performance. |
| Dynamically Reconfigurable | Through the central configuration unit, different algorithm kernels are dynamically loaded at runtime, enabling adaptation to multi‑scenario security policies. |
| Ultra-low latency | Compared to CPU-based software encryption (typically on the order of hundreds of microseconds), hardware pipelining reduces latency to under 10 microseconds. |
| High energy efficiency | 3 W power consumption enables 1 Gbps encryption, making it ideal for battery-powered edge devices such as drones and cameras. |
| Calculate French localization support | Built-in SM4 national cryptographic algorithm, meeting the requirements of Classified Protection and Information Technology Innovation. |
| Fully featured interface | Optical ports, PCIe, and DMA—plug-and-play for servers, industrial PCs, and embedded motherboards. |
IV. Application Scenarios
-
Network security device : Encryption routers, VPN gateways, and firewalls that deliver gigabit‑speed encryption.
-
Data storage encryption : Encrypted hard drives (SATA/NVMe), encrypted USB flash drives, hardware-level transparent encryption and decryption
-
Edge computing device : Security cameras, drones, industrial sensors, local data encryption and upload
-
Communication base station : 5G base station user-plane encryption, offloading CPU load
