At 12:10 on April 17, 2026, the High-Precision Greenhouse Gas Comprehensive Detection Satellite (DQ-2) was successfully launched from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in China. The Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics undertook the development of the satellite’s primary payload—the atmospheric detection lidar subsystem. Developed under the overall leadership of the Eighth Academy of the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, DQ-2 is a mission-oriented operational satellite as outlined in the National Medium- to Long-Term Plan for Civil Space Infrastructure (2015–2025). It combines active and passive remote-sensing techniques to acquire high-spectral-resolution, high-temporal-resolution data on greenhouse gases, pollutant gases, aerosols, and other atmospheric environmental parameters, thereby significantly enhancing global carbon monitoring and air-quality surveillance capabilities. The satellite will provide quantitative remote-sensing data for multiple sectors in China, including ecological environment, meteorology, and agriculture.

The DQ-2 satellite atmospheric lidar achieves high-precision, global column-averaged CO₂ concentration measurements day and night through laser-path-integrated differential absorption spectroscopy. Combined with high-spectral-resolution detection, it also obtains high-accuracy vertical profiles of aerosol distributions. Operating in tandem with the atmospheric lidar on the Atmospheric Environment Monitoring Satellite (DQ-1), it will significantly increase the frequency of global observations of greenhouse gases as well as three-dimensional atmospheric clouds and aerosols. The global datasets acquired by the lidar payload in orbit will support the nation’s “carbon peak” and “carbon neutrality” strategies by providing high-precision monitoring of atmospheric CO₂ concentrations, while also furnishing high-accuracy data on CO₂ concentrations and vertical profiles of aerosols and clouds for global environmental monitoring and climate–weather research.
