Programmable Nonlinear Quantum Photonic Circuit

The team of Peter Lodahl, Stefano Paesani, and Ying Wang at the University of Copenhagen has demonstrated a multimode nonlinear photonic circuit in which both linear and direct nonlinear operations can be programmed with high precision at the single-photon level. Nonlinear interactions are realized through tunable quantum dots embedded in nanophotonic waveguides, which mediate interactions between individual photons within time‑linear optical interferometers. The authors showcase the ability to reprogram nonlinear photonic circuits and implement protocols that require strong nonlinearity—particularly quantum simulations of anharmonic molecular dynamics—thereby demonstrating a completely new and critical capability enabled by this technology.
The research findings were published in Nature Communications on December 11, 2025, under the title “Programmable nonlinear quantum photonic circuits.”
