Technical Data
TECHSPEC®Germanium plano-convex (PCX) lenses use precision diamond lathe turning surfaces, a feature that makes them ideal for a variety of infrared applications, including thermal imaging, infrared spectroscopy and telemetry. Diameter is 25mm and 50mm can be obtained, these lenses can have uncoated or multiple broadband coating options.
Germanium is widely used because of its high refractive index, large transmission distance range and strong mechanical properties. Germanium has a transmission range of 2 - 16 μm and is opaque in the visible region of the spectrum, making it well suited for infrared laser applications. However, germanium is subject to the phenomenon of thermal runaway, that is, the transmittance decreases with increasing temperature; in fact, germanium is almost opaque at a temperature of 100°C and completely non-transmissive at a temperature of 200°C. When designing equipment for weight-sensitive systems, the high-density (5.33g/cm3) characteristic of germanium should be taken into account. Germanium's Knoop hardness (780) is about twice that of magnesium fluoride, a feature that makes it ideal for infrared applications that require robust optics. Germanium does not react with air, water, alkali metals and acids (except nitric acid).
