Introduction

Recently,Professor Sang Xinzhu and Professor Yu Xunbo's team from Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunicationsproposed a three-dimensional (3D) light field display technology that separately controls chromaticity and luminance information, significantly improving information utilization efficiency and achieving high-fidelity 3D display effects with full parallax and a wide viewing angle. This achievement is titled “High-fidelity light-field display with enhanced information utilization by modulating chromainance and luminance separately” and published inLight: Science & Applications,Zhang Zhaoh, a doctoral student at Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications,is the first author of this paper,Professor Yu Xunbo from Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunicationsis the corresponding author.

3D light field display overcomes the limitations of binocular parallax 3D display viewing freedom and problems such as dizziness and discomfort. Its development and improvement will bring about innovations in human-computer interaction. The number of viewpoints and spatial resolution are two core indicators of 3D light field display, and both determine the quality of 3D display: the higher the number of viewpoints, the higher the restoration degree of the 3D scene; the higher the spatial resolution, the clearer the 3D image.

A 3D light field display consists of a 2D display panel and a light control device. Limited by the spatial bandwidth product of the 2D display panel, there is an inherent contradiction between the number of viewpoints and the spatial resolution. Traditional methods increase the number of viewpoints by improving the resolution of the 2D display panel, but this method is limited by the technological development bottleneck of the 2D display panel and is difficult to achieve a breakthrough. Therefore, how to improve the number of viewpoints and spatial resolution under the condition of limited display bandwidth is an urgent technical difficulty and challenge in the field of 3D display.

Based on the difference in human eye's perception of chromaticity and luminance information, a light field display method that separates and controls chromaticity and luminance information is proposed. Dense information is provided for luminance content, to which the human eye is highly sensitive, to ensure display effect; sparse information is provided for chromaticity content, to which the human eye is less sensitive, to ensure information utilization efficiency.

The display system structure is shown in Figure 1, including a collimated light source, a luminance modulation film, a chromaticity modulation film, and a bidirectional angle modulation grating. A low-pixel-density chromaticity modulation film is used to control chromaticity information, and a high-pixel-density luminance modulation film is used to control luminance information, realizing the separation and control of chromaticity and luminance information. The light field display device realized by the above chromaticity and luminance separation control method has a field of view of 98.2° (horizontal) × 97.7° (vertical), a spatial resolution of 1000 × 1000, a display depth of 45 cm, and a number of viewpoints of 100 (horizontal) × 100 (vertical).

Compared with the traditional method with the same total amount of information, the light field display method that separates and controls chromaticity and luminance information is shown inFigure 2as shown below. The light field display with separated control of chromaticity and luminance information is clearer, and the display effect is significantly improved.

Applications and Prospects

In the future, it is planned to improve the information utilization efficiency of dynamic 3D light field display systems through a split-screen structure (low color depth, high pixel density luminance screen + low pixel density, high color depth chromaticity screen) to achieve high-quality 3D light field display effects.
