Emberion launches breakthrough ultra-low cost shortwave infrared image sensor
Author:
According to Maims Consulting, the cost of short-wave infrared (SWIR) imaging technology currently severely limits its application in various fields such as industry, defense and surveillance, automotive, and professional/consumer. Emberion, a leading innovator in quantum dot-based short-wave infrared sensing technology, has recently launched its new ultra-low-cost short-wave infrared image sensor, which can reduce the mass production cost of this sensor to 50 euros. This revolutionary product will provide high-performance infrared imaging for mass-market applications such as automotive and consumer electronics, while promoting the wider use of short-wave infrared imaging in industry, defense and surveillance. The small size and light weight of this short-wave infrared image sensor further expands the possibilities of the technology in a variety of scenarios. Emberion has launched and sold high-speed shortwave infrared cameras with an extended wavelength range and plans to bring the first ultra-low-cost sensor to market in 2025.

Introducing advanced shortwave infrared imaging technology into everyday devices at prices well below current costs
The new Emberion sensor series is designed to bring advanced shortwave infrared technology to a wider range of applications, including mass production markets such as automotive sensing and consumer electronics. The new ultra-low-cost short-wave infrared image sensor combines Emberion existing patented quantum dot sensor technology with wafer-level packaging technology, significantly reducing the manufacturing cost of the sensor. At present, short-wave infrared image sensors based on InGaAs and quantum dots are usually packaged in metal or ceramic housings. The production cost of a single imager varies depending on the sensor technology, wavelength range, packaging method and output, and the total cost is several hundred euros. It ranges from several thousand euros. The Emberion shortwave infrared image sensor is manufactured and packaged on the entire wafer. As many as 100 shortwave infrared image sensors can be packaged on a single 8-inch wafer, so the production cost of a single sensor is only a small part of the cost of existing alternatives. In addition to low cost, the sensor can also highly integrate functions into a self-designed read-out integrated circuit (ROIC), further reducing size and weight while maintaining stable performance, thereby enabling many functions in everyday technology that were previously only suitable for high-end or niche markets.
Examples of applications for low-cost, compact sensors:
-Automotive industry: Enhanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) to improve visibility in adverse weather conditions, thereby improving safety and performance.
-Consumer electronics: Integrate short-wave infrared image sensors into smartphones and wearable devices to achieve facial recognition, gesture control and material recognition under full lighting conditions.
-Augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR): Provides more accurate environmental sensing, making interactions in AR/VR environments more realistic and immersive.
Drones: Precision vision systems for consumer and defense markets, supporting navigation and object detection.
The main advantages of Emberion short wave infrared sensor:
-Cost-effectiveness: Wafer-level packaging greatly simplifies the production process, making the sensor significantly lower in cost than existing short-wave infrared solutions. In addition, the sensor is highly integrated and has embedded image processing, which significantly reduces the need for image post-processing and reduces the reliance on system-level camera components.
-Optimization of size, weight and power consumption (SWaP): Miniaturized and high-performance designs are ideal for space-constrained applications, such as consumer electronics and automotive components. The high integration of the sensor is also an important factor in the optimization of the system SWaP.
-Stability: Wafer-level packaging improves the stability and protection of the sensor, making it suitable for harsh environments such as automobiles and outdoors. If necessary, it can also be integrated into an external package such as LCC or metal package.
-Extended Wavelength Sensitivity: The wavelength range from 400 nm to 2000 nm is ideal for detecting objects and scenes beyond the spectral range of traditional short-wave infrared sensors.
Emberion has already introduced high-speed, extended wavelength shortwave infrared cameras and plans to introduce the first product based on ultra-low-cost shortwave infrared image sensors to the market in 2025. Emberion are currently looking for customers to take full advantage of the product's wider wavelength range, high frame rate, small size, low power consumption and competitive price.
