Huang He and others have shown that oral Shensong Yangxin capsule after radiofrequency ablation can reduce the recurrence of atrial fibrillation in patients with persistent atrial fibrillation!

Despite technological advances, the recurrence rate of persistent atrial fibrillation (AF) after catheter ablation remains high. Shensongyangxin capsule (SSYX) is a well-known traditional Chinese medicine formula for the treatment of arrhythmia.

On August 23, 2024, Jia Zhenhua of Yiling Hospital of Hebei Province, Huang He of Wuhan University and Feifan Ouyang of Hamburg University of Germany jointly communicatedEuropean Heart Journal(IF=37.6)Published online entitled“Prevention of atrial tachyarrhythmia after persistent atrial fibrillation: a SS-AFRF trial”The research paper,The study conducted aSS-AFRF trial of shensong yangxin capsule for prevention of atrial tachycardia after catheter ablation of persistent atrial fibrillation.

A total of 920 patients underwent randomization (460 to the SSYX group and 460 to the placebo group). During the 12-month follow-up period, patients assigned to SSYX had a higher event-free rate of recurrent atrial tachycardia compared with the placebo group. Patients who received SSYX had better quality of life scores at 12 months compared with patients randomized to placebo. There was no significant difference in the incidence of serious adverse events between the two groups.During a 12-month follow-up in a Chinese population, treatment of persistent AF with SSYX after radiofrequency catheter ablation reduced the incidence of recurrent atrial tachycardia and significantly improved quality of life.

The prevalence and medical costs of atrial fibrillation (AF) are increasing both in China and worldwide. Epidemiological evidence shows that the incidence of AF in Chinese adults is 1.6 percent, 1.7 percent in men and 1.4 percent in women. It can seriously affect the quality of life (QoL) and increase the risk of stroke, heart failure and mortality. Rhythm control, the basis of comprehensive management of atrial fibrillation, is associated with reduced adverse cardiovascular outcomes. Despite technological advances, the recurrence rate of persistent atrial fibrillation after catheter ablation remains high. Short-term use of antiarrhythmic drugs (AADs) after ablation significantly reduces the risk of early but not late atrial arrhythmias. Although prolonged use of AADs during the post-ablation blanks may reduce the recurrence of atrial tachycardia, the high rate of discontinuation suggests that side effects or ineffectiveness may limit the long-term use of AADs after ablation.

Traditional Chinese medicine has a history of more than 2000 years and has been widely used in clinical practice. Shensongyangxin capsule (SSYX) is a famous Chinese patent medicine, which is composed of 12 kinds of Chinese herbal medicine. Approved by the State Food and Drug Administration of China in 2003 (record number: Z20030058), it is reported to be effective in the treatment of arrhythmia.Preclinical studies have shown that SSYX effectively inhibits myocardial remodeling, reduces myocardial fibrosis, blocks a variety of ion channels, regulates cardiac autonomic nerve function, reduces cardiac load, and has significant anti-arrhythmic effects.

Randomized clinical trials have shown that SSYX significantly reduces the frequency of premature ventricular contractions and paroxysmal atrial fibrillation. What's more, SSYX shows excellent safety, potentially safer than AADs. Gastrointestinal reactions, such as nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, constipation, and thirst, are the most common side effects of SSYX, but they rarely occur. However, it is unclear whether long-term use of SSYX after catheter ablation can effectively and safely reduce AF recurrence in persistent AF.

In a 12-month follow-up of a Chinese population, SSYX treatment of persistent AF after radiofrequency catheter ablation reduced the incidence of recurrent atrial tachycardia and significantly improved quality of life. Therefore, oral SSYX after catheter ablation is effective and safe to reduce the risk of AF recurrence in patients with persistent AF, and may provide an innovative treatment strategy for patients with persistent AF after catheter ablation.
